CAT 2025 Results: Normalisation & Scaling

CAT 2025 is conducted in three different sessions on the same day, with different question sets of similar difficulty. Because the papers are not identical, raw marks alone cannot be used to compare all candidates fairly.

That is where normalisation and scaling come in.

In simple terms, normalisation adjusts scores across sessions so that a candidate in a slightly tougher slot is not unfairly punished, and someone in an easier slot is not unfairly rewarded.

How Normalisation Works in CAT:

1. Conduct exam in multiple sessions

CAT 2025 is held in three slots on November 30, 2025. Each slot has its own question paper designed to be similar in difficulty, but small variations always exist. So the exam authority first treats each session as a separate test for initial scoring.

2. Calculate raw scores for each candidate

For every candidate, raw scores are calculated section-wise and overall using the marking scheme (correct answers, negative marking for wrong answers, and no marks for questions left unattempted). At this stage, scores are not comparable across slots.

3. Analyse performance pattern in each session

The testing body studies how candidates performed in each session: average marks, spread of scores, highest and lowest scores, and distribution of marks. This shows if one slot turned out slightly tougher or easier than another.

4. Apply a statistical normalisation formula

Using statistical methods (similar to standardisation or equating), raw scores in each slot are transformed to a common scale. The idea is that a candidate with the same ability level ends up with a similar scaled score regardless of the slot in which they appeared.

5. Derive scaled scores for each section and overall

After normalisation, each candidate now has scaled scores for VARC, DILR, QA, and for the overall paper. These scaled scores are what appear internally in the CAT system and are used to compute percentiles.

6. Compute section-wise and overall percentiles

For each section and overall, CAT ranks all candidates based on scaled scores and then converts those ranks into percentiles. Your percentile shows the percentage of test-takers who scored less than you. These percentiles finally appear on the CAT 2025 scorecard.

Example:

Imagine two candidates:

  • Candidate A appears in Slot 1, which turns out slightly tougher.
  • Candidate B appears in Slot 2, which turns out slightly easier.

Suppose both score 60 raw marks in Quant:

  • In Slot 1, the average is 40 and the paper is tough, so 60 is a high score.
  • In Slot 2, the average is 50 and the paper is easier, so 60 is only slightly above average.

After normalisation, CAT might convert:

  • Candidate A’s raw 60 → scaled 70
  • Candidate B’s raw 60 → scaled 63

Now, when percentiles are calculated on these scaled scores, Candidate A will get a higher percentile than Candidate B, which is fair because A performed better relative to other candidates in a tougher slot.

IIM Bodh Gaya9274705440
IIM Sambalpur7474705440
IIM Sirmaur9274705440

Top IIMs like Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore, and Kozhikode require 80–95 percentile for General category candidates, with Indore and Rohtak having notably high thresholds.

New-generation IIMs such as Raipur, Ranchi, Udaipur, Trichy, and Kashipur maintain cut-offs in the 90–92 percentile range.

Baby IIMs – Jammu, Bodh Gaya, Sirmaur, Nagpur, Sambalpur – show more accessible cut-offs, especially for reserved categories.

Category-wise relaxation is significant, with ST cut-offs going as low as 30–40 percentile in some institutes.

CAT 2025 Result: Sectional Cut-Off

This is the expected section-wise cut-off to know:

IIMVARCDILRQA
IIM Ahmedabad707070
IIM Bangalore807575
IIM Lucknow858585
IIM Calcutta808075
IIM Indore808080
IIM Kozhikode757575
IIM Amritsar757580

IIM Bodh Gaya707070
IIM Kashipur707070
IIM Jammu707070
IIM Raipur707070
IIM Ranchi808080

Sectional cut-offs are crucial for IIM shortlisting, especially in top institutes. IIM Lucknow demands the highest sectional performance with 85+ marks percentile across VARC, DILR, and QA, making it one of the toughest IIMs to qualify for sectionally.

IIM Bangalore and Calcutta also maintain strong sectional filters, often rejecting candidates with high overall percentiles but low sectional scores. IIM Ahmedabad maintains uniform sectional criteria of 70 percentile across sections, but competition remains intense due to overall composite scoring.

Newer IIMs like Bodh Gaya, Kashipur, and Jammu keep sectionals around 70 percentile, allowing greater flexibility. These cut-offs help ensure balanced performance across all areas of the CAT exam.

What After CAT 2025 Results?

Once the CAT result 2025 is announced and scorecards are available on iimcat.ac.in, a series of important steps begin for admissions to IIMs and other top B-schools.

1. Download and Review Your CAT 2025 Scorecard

The first step is to download the scorecard PDF from the official website. Check your section-wise scaled scores, overall score, section-wise percentiles, and overall percentile, along with your name, category, and exam date.

2. Shortlisting by Individual IIMs

Each IIM uses CAT 2025 scores as a major component for shortlisting candidates for the next stage. However, every IIM has its own admission policy, cut-offs, and weightages for CAT score, academics, work experience, and diversity factors.

Shortlisted candidates’ names are published on the respective IIM websites, and interview calls or emails are sent directly by those IIMs.

3. WAT / GD / PI Rounds (Second Stage of Selection)

After shortlisting, candidates move to the Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) in some institutes, and Personal Interview (PI).

Performance in these rounds, along with CAT 2025 scores, forms the backbone of the final selection. IIMs also consider academic records (10th, 12th, graduation), quality and length of work experience, and gender or academic diversity as part of this stage.

4. Final Composite Score and Admission Offers

Each IIM prepares a final merit list by assigning pre-declared weightages to:

  • CAT 2025 overall and sectional percentiles
  • WAT/GD and PI performance
  • Academic background
  • Work experience
  • Diversity components

Based on this composite score, IIMs release final admission offers for their MBA/PGP or equivalent programmes for the 2026–28 batch.

5. Admission to Non-IIM Institutes Using CAT Score

Alongside IIMs, many reputed non-IIM institutes use CAT 2025 results for their MBA/PGDM admissions. These institutes publish cut-offs and shortlisting criteria separately.

The list of non-IIM member institutions that use CAT scores is provided on the official CAT website, but IIMs do not control their selection process in any way.

6. Eligibility and Document Verification

For candidates who receive interview calls, there is a detailed eligibility verification stage.

You must produce:

  • Original mark sheets of all semesters/years
  • Degree certificate or provisional certificate
  • Valid category/disability certificates (SC/ST/NC-OBC/EWS/PwD), if applicable

For final-year students: a certificate from the Principal/Registrar confirming that degree requirements have been completed

Failure to meet CAT eligibility requirements or provide valid documents can lead to cancellation of the offer.

7. Final Joining and Programme Commencement

Candidates who accept the admission offers, pay the required fees, and complete formalities finally join their respective IIMs or other institutes around June–July 2026.
