Why Did You Choose IPMAT?

LPT Interviewer: Deep down into it, why IPMAT? This is something that I ask all the students.

Geet: Well, I get access to the best peers from all across the country who are extremely interested in business and finance. I get access to the best faculty. I get infrastructural access, such as the sports facilities at IIM Indore. I also get access to Reuters terminals for finance and many opportunities I wouldn't get at a normal college.

Does Choosing Mathematics Help in IPMAT Preparation?

LPT Interviewer: Okay. And you know, Geet, which stream did you have in your Class 11 and 12?

Geet: Ma'am, I had Commerce with Mathematics.

LPT Interviewer:  So, was it helpful in your IPMAT preparation, or did you actually have to build a base for it?

Geet: Ma'am, having Mathematics does help in your IPMAT preparation. However, the Mathematics that they teach in Classes 11 and 12 is quite different from the Mathematics that you need to learn to appear for the IPMAT exam.

It does not help directly. However, you will see some implicit benefits, such as your calculation speed increasing and a general familiarity with Mathematics. So, I think having Mathematics is an advantage.

LPT Interviewer: So, you are advising all those students who are contemplating whether to pick Mathematics or not. Your answer would be?

Geet: Ma'am, I think that they should pick Mathematics. The IPMAT IPM degree curriculum is also extremely Mathematics-heavy, Statistics-heavy, and Economics-heavy, and you need to know Mathematics. So, I suggest that students take Mathematics, at least Applied Mathematics.

How Difficult Was It to Balance Board Exams and IPMAT Preparation?

LPT Interviewer: Now, Geet, you belong to Mumbai, right? So, the Maharashtra Board has a demanding Class 12 schedule. How difficult was it for you to balance your board exams and IPMAT preparation together?

Geet: Ma'am, balancing board exams and IPMAT preparation was definitely difficult. There were times when I thought that preparing for the boards was harder than preparing for IPMAT.

From December onwards, I started focusing completely on my board exams. Board marks help a lot. They help you with admissions to other colleges apart from IIM Indore. They also create a good impression during your IIM Indore interview.

So, I suggest that students should not skip board preparation. They should not focus completely on IPMAT. They should also focus on their board exams.

LPT Interviewer: I think that for almost two to three months, you were just preparing for your board exams, right? During that time, your IPMAT preparation took a backseat. How did you cope with those three crucial months? Because just after boards, there are the IPMAT exams. So, how did you deal with that?

Geet: I believe that as soon as your board exams are over, you need to focus completely on IPMAT. Your syllabus should already be complete by then.

Start revising. Start solving as many questions as you can because solving a large number of questions builds mental models and pattern recognition, which can help you in the exam.

What Was Your Daily Routine During Board Exams and IPMAT Preparation?

LPT Interviewer: Okay. And what was your daily routine like while you were preparing for your board exams and while you were preparing for IPMAT?

Geet: While I was preparing for my board exams, I generally tried to devote the entire day to boards.

However, I had an innate interest in IPMAT. So, I kept solving some questions occasionally, looking at forums, and practising sectionals, but my primary focus was on boards.

Coming to my IPMAT preparation, at that point, I focused the most on completing my syllabus. I tried to learn the topics in depth, and I also tried to balance mock tests with IPMAT syllabus completion.

Do Board Exams and IPMAT Preparation Overlap?

LPT Interviewer: So, is it not that your board preparation and IPMAT preparation often overlap? You mentioned that you had Applied Mathematics. There must be some common topics. So, was it not, in a way, that you were revising for IPMAT while preparing for your board exams?

Geet: Ma'am, topics such as matrices and logarithms are repeated in IPMAT.

In a way, when you study Mathematics for your board exams, you are revising for IPMAT, and vice versa. Maybe you should focus more on topics such as logarithms while preparing for Class 12 so that you also strengthen your IPMAT preparation.

LPT Interviewer: Correct. It's like they go hand in hand, and it's a win-win situation. You don't lose hold of anything, right? Because those three months are very crucial.

Yes, board exams are important, but so is IPMAT. So, it's a very smart strategy. You pick those topics that are common and simultaneously prepare for your board exams and IPMAT together as well, right?

Geet: I think that even if you are in the middle of your board exams, you should spend at least two hours a week glancing over all the formulas and concepts so that you don't forget anything.

Because learning after forgetting is as good as learning from scratch.

So, I believe that you should keep revising. You should never break your learning path.

Which Section Challenged You the Most During Your IPMAT Preparation?

LPT Interviewer: Now that we are talking about all this, which section actually challenged you the most throughout your IPMAT journey?

Geet: The most challenging section for me was the QA MCQ section. Theoretically, I should have scored more in the MCQ section since there are options and a variety of questions. However, I scored less there, even compared to the SA section.

My primary mistakes were poor question selection and low accuracy while trying to finish the maximum number of questions possible. These were the primary reasons why I was weak in that section.

I believe that as you complete your syllabus and take more mock tests, you'll improve in the MCQ section, or any other section in which you're weak.

How I Improved My QA MCQ Strategy for IPMAT

LPT Interviewer: So, it's basically that you first have to identify your strengths and weaknesses and then make a strategy accordingly, right?

Like you mentioned, you faced difficulties in the QA MCQ section. So, what sort of strategy helped you overcome that?

Geet: I believe that anybody attempting the QA MCQ section should first begin with the DILR set.

It can give you the maximum number of marks for the least amount of effort and time. Look at the set for about two minutes and think about whether you can solve it. If you can, go ahead and solve it as quickly as possible to secure those five questions.

Then, I believe that you should not blindly attempt questions.

You should go through the questions sequentially and categorise them into buckets, such as:

• Questions to do right now
• Questions to do later
• Questions that are very difficult and may not be worth attempting

LPT Interviewer: Right. They can be marked for review, for that matter.

Geet: Yes. You can use the exam interface for that.

LPT Interviewer: Correct. See, that is a very good point. Students often miss this. These are the small intricacies that you have to keep in mind.

If a particular option is given to you in the exam interface, it is there for a reason. Many students don't use it. They simply think, "I'll come back to it later," but that "later" never comes, right?

Geet: Students should also develop familiarity with the in-built calculator because that can help while solving the exam as well. Even if you don't immediately know the answer, you can sometimes brute-force it using the calculator.

LPT Interviewer: Yes. Even though you are provided with rough sheets and a pen, it's always advisable to become comfortable with the on-screen calculator used in major competitive exams.

That way, you develop an additional advantage during the exam.

Why Mock Tests Were the Biggest Reason Behind My Improvement

LPT Interviewer: So, now this actually brings me to the next very important question—mock tests.

Mocks are a very important part of any competitive exam. What is your take on them?

Geet:
Mocks are the single most important factor behind your success.

First, they give you a mental blueprint of the exam, so you're never caught by surprise. You already know what you'll do if the paper is difficult or easy. You know the strategy you will follow.

You also become habituated to the IPMAT Indore exam pattern, which helps you a lot. It prevents unnecessary nervousness on the actual exam day and helps you stay calm.

IPMAT Mocks also help you identify the mistakes you make—especially mistakes in question selection, so that you can avoid repeating them.

Completing the syllabus is important. However, the strategy with which you attempt the exam is equally important.

If you attempt questions sequentially or start with difficult questions first, it doesn't necessarily help you.

You need to learn how to prioritise easier questions and maximise your score. That is what mock tests help you achieve.

Why Mock Test Analysis Matters More Than Taking More Mocks

LPT Interviewer: My next question to you is: what is that one non-negotiable when it comes to mock tests?

Geet: I believe that you should spend a lot of time analysing them.

If you simply attempt mock tests but don't look at your mistakes or the questions you got wrong, you are not improving. You're just giving mock tests for the sake of it.

You need to utilise mock tests in a way that benefits your preparation the most.

Analysis is where mock tests actually become useful.

Why I Maintained an Error Log Throughout My Preparation

LPT Interviewer: Correct. And was there any error log that you maintained throughout your preparation journey?

Geet: Yes, Ma'am. I had five sections in QA, so I maintained a separate notebook for each one.

I recorded every error.

• What did I do wrong?
• Did I make a mistake in applying the formula?
• Did I make a calculation error?
• Was my thought process incorrect?

I noted it all of it.

Being familiar with your mistakes helps you avoid repeating them in the final exam.

You already have a mental blueprint. You develop pattern recognition.

It simply becomes much easier to solve whatever questions are thrown at you when you have a record of everything you got wrong earlier.

How I Prepared for the IIM Indore Personal Interview

LPT Interviewer: Now comes the very interesting question. How was your personal interview preparation?

Geet: For my IPMAT personal interview preparation, I emphasised the quantity of mock interviews that I took.

I wanted to become familiar with all kinds of questions, whether they were from academics, current affairs, HR, or domain-related topics. I wanted to become good at all of them so that no matter what the interviewer asked, I had a strong chance of being selected.

In my actual interview, the panel was really intrigued by my introduction, which was geared towards finance.

As far as I remember, I was able to answer every question.

The Most Unexpected Questions I Faced During the IIM Indore Interview

LPT Interviewer: Oh, that's great. And were there any questions that actually surprised you in the interview? Although you looked fully prepared.

Geet: There wasn't a question that I didn't know the answer to, but I was surprised that the interviewers spoke at length about niche finance topics such as the Efficient Market Hypothesis and various investing theses.

That was not what I expected, and it really worked out in my favour.

LPT Interviewer:

Okay, because you just mentioned that you are a finance guy. So, this is again a very important lesson for students. If you're mentioning anything in your introduction, ensure that you know it thoroughly, inside and out.

Just like Geet mentioned, a very intricate question was asked from the finance domain. Finance itself is a huge domain, and anything can be asked.

It seems you were completely prepared, and it was absolutely the right decision to mention it in your introduction. It actually worked out in your favor because now you're going to IIM Indore.

Why Extracurricular Activities Matter in the IIM Indore Interview

Geet: I also recommend that students participate in extracurricular activities with barriers to entry.

These activities not only help during the interview process but also help you improve as an individual.

Having barriers to entry for any extracurricular activity instantly makes it more valuable in the eyes of the interviewer.

If you're able to talk about what you've done apart from your studies, it really works in your favour. Otherwise, interviewers can always continue asking academic questions.

However, if you have something that you know a lot about, you can guide the interview in your own direction, and that can really help you.

LPT Interviewer:
Correct. In fact, IIM Indore is known for its holistic curriculum. They will, of course, ask questions beyond your academics.

There's a reason why they don't give weightage only to academic scores. They focus significantly on extracurricular activities as well.

Among the students who get selected, I've noticed that the majority have worked tremendously on their extracurricular activities.

You are one of them.

So, what would be your biggest piece of advice for students who are preparing alongside Class 12 and will be appearing for IPMAT 2027?

Geet Luncker's Final Advice for IPMAT 2027 Aspirants

Geet: I'd say that you should be consistent with your IPMAT preparation.

Also, revision is the most important thing. Don't just complete the syllabus; revise everything that you've learned regularly. That being said, the earlier you finish your syllabus, the better.

For younger students who may be in Class 10 or Class 11, I believe you should start preparing as early as possible because that only works in your favour.

Your preparation never goes to waste. It simply increases your chances of getting selected.
