How to Cover the IPMAT Verbal Ability Syllabus

IPMAT Verbal Ability preparation requires regular reading, vocabulary revision and grammar practice. Start with the main topics, solve questions regularly and use mock tests to identify the areas that need more attention.

1. Read English for 20–30 Minutes Every Day

Read newspaper editorials, opinion articles and long-form articles on science, business, society and economics. After reading, summarise the main argument in two or three sentences. This will help you understand the author's purpose, tone and supporting points.

2. Build Your Vocabulary Through Context

Learn around 10–15 new words every day. Note down their meanings, synonyms, antonyms and an example sentence. Revise previously learned words every few days to remember them for longer.

3. Revise Grammar Rules

Cover tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions, modifiers, conjunctions and parallelism. After revising each rule, solve error-spotting and sentence-correction questions to understand how grammar works in actual exam questions.

4. Practise Para Jumbles and Sentence Completion

Look for connecting words, pronouns, repeated ideas and cause-and-effect relationships. In para jumbles, identify the opening sentence and related sentence pairs first. For sentence completion, check whether the answer fits both the grammar and the meaning of the sentence.

5. Solve Previous-Year Papers

Attempt previous-year IPMAT papers separately for Indore and Rohtak. Record your accuracy for different topics and review every incorrect answer. This will help you understand the differences between the two examinations and identify question formats that require more practice.

6. Take Sectional Tests and Full-Length Mocks

Begin with untimed practice to understand the concepts. Gradually move to timed tests and full-length IPMAT mocks. For IIM Indore, practise completing 45 Verbal Ability questions within the section's 40-minute limit. For IIM Rohtak, practise managing all three sections within the overall examination time limit.

7. Maintain a Mistake Notebook

Record unfamiliar words, grammar rules you frequently get wrong and questions you answer incorrectly. Revise your notes every week. Understanding why an answer is wrong will help you avoid repeating the same mistakes.
